Is trying too hard the latest disease on the path to success? Perhaps "playing hard to get" is really not at all about relationships, although it certainly seems to be affective in that area. Pretending you are uninterested in someone often sparks interest. Pretending to dislike society, or even an audience, often gets rock stars the rebellious praise they seek from that society. Dancers work harder than any athlete to achieve the perception of effortlessness. But be aware everyone. Try hard, but never reveal it.
